URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS (UTIs)

Description

A UTI or urinary tract infection is an infection affecting any section of your urinary system. From your kidneys to the ureters or bladder, even the urethra. These tend to happen mostly in the lower part of the urinary tract, meaning the urethra and/or bladder.

Women have a higher likelihood of suffering from such an infection than men. The symptoms of a bladder infection can be quite painful and bothersome but the risk of serious complications takes place when the UTI reaches your kidneys.

The treatment for UTI is generally antibiotics and fortunately, there are steps you can take to reduce your chances of getting a UTI

Symptoms

While UTIs don’t always come accompanied by symptoms, when they do they usually include the following:

  • Frequent urination
  • Burning sensation
  • Cloudy urine
  • Colored urine (from red to pink or even dark brown, which indicates blood in the urine)
  • Foul smell
  • Pelvic discomfort

Occasionally UTIs can be mistaken for other issues, especially in adults.
